To mark the start of the 2026/27 winter semester, the International Offices, the Kölner Studierendenwerk (Cologne Student Services Organisation) and the City of Cologne are inviting the new international students from eight Cologne universities to the traditional welcome reception at Cologne’s Historic Town Hall on Friday 9 October at 5.30 pm.
The day kicks off with a free guided tour of the city in German or English – the perfect way to get to know Cologne and perhaps meet a few new people at the same time. Afterwards, it’s time for the official proceedings: amongst others, Mayor Derya Karadag and – representing the universities – Prof. Ansgar Thiel, Rector of the German Sport University Cologne, will welcome the new international students. A special moment also awaits five students: they will receive the DAAD Prize for their outstanding commitment and achievements.

Zum Start ins Wintersemester 2026/27 laden die International Offices, das Kölner Studierendwerk und die Stadt Köln am Freitag, 9. Oktober, 17:30 Uhr, die neuen internationalen Studierenden von acht Kölner Hochschulen zum traditionellen Empfang ins Historische Rathaus Köln ein.
Los geht’s schon vorher mit einer kostenlosen Stadtführung auf Deutsch oder Englisch – perfekt, um Köln und vielleicht auch gleich ein paar neue Leute kennenzulernen. Anschließend wird es offiziell: Unter anderem heißen Bürgermeisterin Derya Karadag und – stellvertretend für die Hochschulen – Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ansgar Thiel, Rektor der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln, die neuen Internationals willkommen. Ein besonderer Moment wartet außerdem auf fünf Studierende: Sie erhalten den DAAD-Preis für ihr herausragendes Engagement und ihre Leistungen.
