Brazilian Forró Dance Night

Foto: Anne Berkemeyer © Kölner Studierendenwerk    Forró – Brazil’s most popular couple dance – means music, dancing and party at the same time and enthralled the students of Cologne University for the second time now. The dance style represents a part of North-eastern Brazilian traditional culture.

Brazilian music, tasty Caipirinha and dancing couples flying over the dance floor to the sound of easy-going rhythms of Forró-music – UniMensa at night! For the second time now, on May 18 (also on April 27, 2010), the Info-Café-International ICI was changed into a dance hall hosting the Brazilian dance night.

The lively dance instructor from Brazil, Maria de Bahia, begins the course in the Brazilian way – learning by doing. Together with her son and daughter, Maria teaches the forró-moves to anyone interested in the dance which slightly reminds one of Salsa. Her cheerful nature animates even the most reluctant, no previous knowledge necessary.

Forró may be a couple dance, but the couples are formed freely in the course of the evening. Bringing a dancing partner is optional – if you want to dance, you will dance! In Brazil, forró-festivals usually last till deep into the night and also the enthusiastic dancers at UniMensa in Cologne left the dance floor rather late at night…

The first forró dance night of the new term 2010/11 will be on October 19 at 7 p.m. in ICI (UniMensa).

Other forro dance nights will be on November 16, December 12 and January 18 in 2011.
At the end of the term on January 28, 2011, there will be a big forró-party at UniMensa, with live music, caipirinhas, Brazilian snacks and, of course, forró!
