Für ca. 300 Studierende und Gastwissenschaftler*innen aus aller Welt bildete ein stimmungsvoller Empfang im Historischen Rathaus den Auftakt zum Start ins Wintersemester in Köln. Nach langjähriger Tradition lud die Stadt Köln zusammen mit den International Offices von acht Kölner Hochschulen und dem Kölner Studierendenwerk die Internationals im Oktober zu einem knapp einstündigen Empfang mit anschließender Infobörse ein.
Im Vorfeld konnten sich die Internationals auf deutsch- oder englischsprachigen Stadtführungen ein erstes Bild von der Kölner Altstadt machen. Danach gings in die eindrucksvolle Piazzetta des Historischen Rathauses, wo das deutsch/mexikanische Duo Olideon aus Studierenden der Hochschule für Musik & Tanz (Charlotte Komar/Mezzosopran, und Jhostin Guzmán/Gitarre) die Neuankömmlinge musikalisch begrüßten.
Danach nahmen Bürgermeister Andreas Wolter, TH-Vizepräsident Prof. Dr. Axel Faßbender, Julia Quirll da Matta vom Deutschen Akademischen Auslandsdienst (DAAD) sowie Dr. Klaus Wilsberg, Leiter Unternehmenskommunikation im Kölner Studierendenwerk, die Studierenden mit Grußworten in Empfang.
Als weiterer Programmpunkt wurden fünf Studierende von Universität, Technischer Hochschule, Sporthochschule, Hochschule für Musik & Tanz und CBS International Business School mit dem DAAD-Preis geehrt, die sich in kurzen Videos vorstellten und ihre persönlichen Tipps für Internationals in Köln verrieten. Der mit je 1.000 EUR dotierte DAAD-Preis würdigt besondere akademische Leistungen, aber auch soziales Engagement ausländischer Studierender in Deutschland.
Nach dem festlichen Empfang stärkten sich die Internationals mit Kölsch und einem Buffet der Hochschulgastronomie des Kölner Studierendenwerks. Der Austausch mit anderen Internationals und zahlreiche Infostände, u.a. von Hochschulgemeinden, Internationalen Hochschulgruppen und Ausländerbehörde, rundeten das Programm ab.

For approximately 300 students and visiting scholars from all over the world, an atmospheric reception in the historic town hall marked the start of the winter semester in Cologne. In keeping with a long-standing tradition, the City of Cologne, together with the international offices of eight Cologne universities and the Cologne Student Services Organisation (Kölner Studierendenwerk), invited international students to a reception followed by an information fair in October.
Beforehand, the international guests were able to get a first impression of Cologne's old town on guided tours in German or English. Afterwards, they proceeded to the impressive piazzetta of the historic town hall, where the German/Mexican duo Olideon, made up of students from the Cologne University of Music and Dance (Charlotte Komar/mezzo-soprano and Jhostin Guzmán/guitar), welcomed the recently arrived students with music.
Mayor Andreas Wolter, TH Vice-President Prof. Dr. Axel Faßbender, Julia Quirll da Matta from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Dr. Klaus Wilsberg, Head of Corporate Communications at the Cologne Student Union, welcomed the students with words of greeting.
As a further item on the programme, five students from the University, Technical University, Sports University, University of Music & Dance and CBS International Business School were honoured with the DAAD Prize. They introduced themselves in short videos and shared their personal tips for international students in Cologne. The DAAD Prize, worth €1,000 each, recognises outstanding academic achievements as well as social engagement by foreign students in Germany.
After the festive reception, the international students enjoyed Kölsch beer and a buffet provided by the catering service of the Cologne Student Services Organisation. The programme was rounded off by exchanges with other international students and numerous information stands, including those run by university communities, international university groups and the immigration office.
