Lord Mayor welcomes international students and guest scientists

Equipped with good advice and bags full of information material, the newly enrolled international students and guest scientists were looking forward to their life in Cologne.

The mayor of Cologne Jürgen Roters and Dr. Peter Schink, head of Kölner Studierendenwerk, welcomed all guests and representatives of all Cologne universities on October 6 in a festive reception at City Hall. Earlier, the students had the chance to attend a guided tour through the historic city of Cologne so that they would get to know the city and its history better.

The big band SpoHoBigBand of the German Sport University Cologne opened the welcome reception with a rousing performance. In his speech, Lord Mayor Roters welcomed the 450 international students and guest scientists and was delighted at the sight of so many new guests and their interest in the City of Cologne as an excellent place for study and research. He emphasized the importance of a stay abroad both for personal and professional reasons and invited the guests to take some time to really explore the city with its numerous cultural and entertainment offers.

Dr. Peter Schink encouraged the new arrivals in his speech to take part in the diverse cultural program of the Kölner Studierendenwerk: for example the international cooking event MultiCulti-Kitchen for students, the weekly meetings at Café Babylon for casual multilingual conversation and the numerous offers for consulting and mediation. Finally he invited all the guests to celebrate with a drink and some finger food. In the meantime, the students took the chance to gather information about the different university groups, the AStA and, last but not least, about the Kölner Studierendenwerk. Here the students were helped with all their question and problems and could find information on current events and projects.
